Stool
This stool is probably the first piece of furniture created by Jules Wabbes. It was born from his research on slatted furniture, as well as the flat desk called “Gérard Philipe”. The stool is indeed made of solid wood slats of two hard exotic woods, with contrasting colors, Wenge and Sipo. The craftsmanship of Jules Wabbes’s furniture shines through in the intricate details of this piece, where the hand-assembled slats are secured with glue and joined by mortise and tenon. Notice the cross braces that reinforce and connect the legs, as well as the visible strengthening of the seat and its subtly indented center. The seat itself is divided into four equal parts thanks to the stitching of the leather.
This item is visually appealing from all perspectives, serving as a focal point. It is the embodiment of a successful chair, designed as a mini-architecture or a small sculpture that has the unique ability to support the human body without deforming.
This basic form evokes the ancient Egyptian sieges, the oldest known furniture that has been preserved to this day.
The model that Jules Wabbes created and that is manufactured today remains a prototype. In the end, a more traditional rectangular model with turned wooden legs was chosen for the sewing salon. The reason for this is simple: it was a question of time, namely manufacturing time and cost.
