Tulip Table Lamp

1960

The Tulip Table Lamp is a prototype that was discovered during the retrospective exhibition of Jules Wabbes at the Centre for Fine Arts in Brussels in 2012.
This unique model is not documented in the designer’s archives.
Its curved shapes, however, are reminiscent of the school furniture designed for the XII Milan Triennale in 1960 as well as the bronze table leg known as the "tulip leg" designed around 1966.
The idea for this curved leg comes from a desire to lighten the base. Composed here of three steel elements assembled on a central structure that recall the nickel-plated steel bases of worktables. The fixed lampshade is also made up of three elements: three thin convex metal sheets. The light is subdued on the top thanks to a frosted glass.
This interplay of concave and convex shapes gives the lamp a unique floral aspect of the work of Jules Wabbes, but here, as in the furniture, the assemblies punctuate the decoration linked solely to the structure.
